Florida is built on the source of the problem.

Much of Florida's groundwater moves through limestone. Along the way it picks up dissolved calcium and magnesium—the minerals measured as hardness. That is why hard water can be normal across Greater Orlando even when neighboring utilities report different numbers.

Hardness is not presented here as a health danger. It is a household-performance issue: mineral residue, scale and the extra work required to clean around it.

Read the number without needing a chemistry degree.

OUC reports 129 mg/L, or about 7 grains per gallon. Apopka reports a range of 120–200 mg/L, approximately 7.0–11.7 grains per gallon. A grain per gallon is simply another unit for the same mineral load; one grain is about 17.1 milligrams per liter as calcium carbonate.

The useful question is not whether your water crosses a dramatic line. It is how much mineral is passing through every hot-water surface, fixture and glass you rinse.

The tax is paid in little jobs.

Hardness leaves spots when water evaporates, scale where water is heated and a film that makes soap feel less cooperative. You may use more product or more scrubbing to get the result you expected the first time.

Scale can also make water-heating surfaces work through a mineral layer. The exact cost depends on the home and equipment, so there is no honest universal savings number or guaranteed appliance-lifespan claim.

A softener trades the scale-forming minerals away.

A cation-exchange softener passes water through resin that exchanges calcium and magnesium ions for sodium or potassium ions. In ordinary terms: it removes the minerals responsible for hardness before they can keep leaving their calling card around the house.

System capacity, salt efficiency and regeneration settings still matter. Certification tells you which standard a product was evaluated against; it does not make every certified product identical.

Softening is one job, not every job.

A softener is not a disinfectant, and it is not the same as carbon treatment for chlorine taste and odor. It also does not replace a dedicated drinking-water system carrying specific certified contaminant-reduction claims.

That is why a complete plan can combine technologies: each piece should have a named job instead of pretending one tank solves every water concern.
